O'Brien DDS, JD, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Predoctoral Studies in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry, has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Daniel M. Laskin Award by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The award recognizes the "Outstanding Predoctoral Educator in OMS" (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery).
Wednesday, August 05, 2009 - Statistics released yesterday by the NHS Information Centre reflect a year when dentists were working hard to make the new dental contract of 2006 work, according to the British Dental Association (BDA). The Dental Earnings and Expenses, England and Wales, 2007/08 report, which considers the earnings of dentists who undertook NHS work in England or Wales in the second year of the new contract, paints a picture of earnings settling after a transitional year in 2006/07.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final regulation today, Wednesday, saying that at the levels dentists use for tooth cavity filling, elemental mercury in dental amalgam does not harm patients, although adverse health effects are known to occur at higher exposures. Dental amalgam is made by combining mercury with other metals such as silver, copper and tin.
Wednesday, July 29, 2009 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a final regulation classifying dental amalgam and its component parts - elemental mercury and a powder alloy-used in dental fillings. While elemental mercury has been associated with adverse health effects at high exposures, the levels released by dental amalgam fillings are not high enough to cause harm in patients. The regulation classifies dental amalgam into Class II (moderate risk).
